September 20, 1942

A young man from Athens serves his country in the Philippines
during World War II. This is his sad story.

First Lieutenant Everett Carney of Athens died on this day in 1942. He was being held prisoner by the Japanese, in prison camp number one at Cabanatuan.

Carney was a member of the Army Air Force. He was sent overseas from San Francisco, arriving in the Philippines.

Carney was stationed on the Island of Luzon when he was charged with building camps and airports in the jungle under the duress of continous enemy bombing.

He was then sent to Cebu Island, and joined combat on the Bataan peninsula. Although he was was captured by the Japanese and died on this day, Carney's family would not find out until the following July.
