On September 13, 1931, Baxter's
Store in Marlboro burned. No one in Marlboro seemed overly upset.
Although Baxter's Store was the center of activity, nobody
cared much for Mr. Baxter. One day, when a teary-eyed little girl
came back to tell him she'd spilled a bag of sugar in the
dirt on her way home, he simply gave her an empty bag to pick up
the sugar she'd spilled.
A few months earlier, the church across the street caught fire.
Baxter gladly supplied water to fight the blaze, as long as he got
paid for it.
As Baxter's Store burned, some thought they saw the shape
of a cross in the smoke rising from the roof.

The smokey shape of a cross can clearly be seen above Baxter's Store as it burns.
Many from Marlboro thought it might be a sign of payback to Mr. Baxter,
who wasn't always the nicest of people.
