| The Vermont State Guard found Sgt.
Julius Paulus, also known as “Joe-Joe,” on this morning
in 1944.
Sgt. Paulus had been on Camel’s Hump helping with the rescue
and clean-up from the October 16th Camel’s Hump crash of a
B-24 that claimed nine lives.
Sgt. Paulus wandered away from his Air Corps rescue team and got
lost. Nobody noticed he was missing until roll call that night in
Montpelier.
The Vermont State Guard began a search, and found him in the morning
on the Duxbury side of the mountain. Sgt. Paulus was in perfectly
good health, and had simply wandered back into the vicinity of the
wrecked bomber.

This is the trail up Camel's Hump
from the Duxbury side. Sgt. Paulus was found on this side of the
mountain after spending a night lost. He was part of the rescue
team in the wake of the B-24 Liberator
crash on October 16th, which is commemorated by the plaque (inset)
near the trail.
