The Legislature passed an "Act
To Encourage The Destruction Of Crows Within This State" on
this day in 1833.
Vermont had all together too many crows. Crows were destroying
crops, driving out other birds, and generally causing a nuisance.
The ordinance put in place a 10 cent reward for the killing of
any crow. Appropriate forms were distributed to Town Clerks throughout
the state. People could fill them out, and bring the form, along
with a dead crow, of course, and receive a certificate which would
be redeemed for 10 cents by the state treasurer.
The Town Clerk would mark each crow and dispose of it.
