Captain
Hyde received the deeds to several parcels of land in what would
later be known as Grand Isle on this day in 1783. Captain Hyde and
his son, Jedediah, Jr., were surveyors. They had already surveyed
other towns in Vermont, including Hyde Park.
Jedediah,
Jr. decided to stay in the islands and built a cabin on one of his
father's parcels. The Hyde Log Cabin still stands today, although
it's about two miles southwest of its original location.
This
cabin housed members of the Hyde family for nearly 150 years. The
Hyde Log Cabin has been preserved and is open to the public during
the summer.
