There's a Vermont governor named for General Robert E. Lee who promises
not to outpromise or outspend.

Lee Emerson was born in Hardwick on this day in 1898. He was one of six children and the son of a stonecutter.

After graduating from Barton Academy, Emerson would put himself through Syracuse University, work another three years, and then put himself through George Washington University Night Law School. Emerson returned to Barton to practice law and became involved in local and statewide public service.

In 1951, he became Vermont's governor. Emerson's slogan became "I will not outpromise the promisers nor outspend the spenders." Emerson was known as a hard-working, frugal and humble man.
