Roger Sherman Tracy was born in Windsor on December 9, 1841. He
would become an early expert of and specialize in hygiene.
Tracy graduated from Yale, and taught for five years before getting his
medical degree. He became a physician at Bellevue Hospital, and
one year later became the inspector of prisons and hospitals for
New York City.
Tracy
rose to chief, and upon his retirement in 1901, was earning $4,000
a year...a remarkable sum. By law, his pension was limited to $100
per month.
Tracy
used his retirement to write. A Handbook of Sanitary Information
for Householders is among his most notable works.
