Dover was changing the seating arrangements in its meetinghouse
on this day in 1891. Almost thirty years earlier it had been decided
that the meetinghouse should be availble to “anyone of respectability”
who wanted to use it, as long it wasn’t already engaged by
the preacher.
On
this day it was voted that some of the pews should be removed from
the meetinghouse to make room for a platform for the choir.
Since
the meetinghouse was constructed, the choir had sat in what were
labled the “singers’ seats” at the back of the
church. The pews to the right of the pulpit were removed and a proper
platform was constructed.
