On
August 16, 1811, George Jones was born in Poultney. He would go
on to become a famous publisher.
Jones
would be asked by Horace Greeley, who grew up in nearby West Haven,
to become a founding partner of The New York Tribune. Jones declined,
but took a job in the business office of the paper and became good
friends with Henry J. Raymond, Greeley's chief editorial assistant.
In
1851, Jones and Raymond struck out on their own, founding a little
paper they called The New York Times. When Raymond died, Jones assumed
the helm, even though he didn't have editorial experience.
The paper continued to flourish.
