David Potter of West Rutland nominated a Vermont tree for the National Register of Big Trees on this day in 1978.

The American Forestry Association publishes an updated register of the nation's big trees every two years, and this Vermont tree not only made the list, it became a national champion.

By 1989, this Roundleaf Serviceberry tree, located in the town of Clarendon, had an average distance around of 54 feet! It stood 34 feet tall and had an average crown spread of 42 feet.

To become a national champion, a tree must be the biggest of its species in the country.
