April 6, 1824

It's the letter of the law, and this man wrote it.
We'll go to Manchester for that story.

Edmund Hatch Bennett was born in Manchester on this day in 1824. His life's journey would take him to Massachusetts, where he become the first mayor of Taunton, serving multiple terms.

Bennett became best known for his legal work. He became a judge, often lecturing about law at Harvard University. Bennett also wrote extensively, gaining a respected reputation for his legal insight and knowledge.

Independently or in collaboration with others, he wrote or edited more than 100 legal works during his lifetime. Taunton, Massachusetts is now home to the Edmund Hatch Bennett school, named in his honor.
